|Welcome back to another Bob Asmussen chat.
It is opening week for Illinois football. I have to admit, I am fired up for the first full weekend of games.
I couldn't help myself last week. I watched Cal Hawaii and North Dakota State Charleston Southern. it was cool to see the sites in Sydney and in Fargo. My wife pointed ot an area near the Sydney Opera House and said "Hey, that's where we got cheap jerseys engaged." Yes, the rest of the family likes college football too.
While I think Illinois will win against Murray State, the Racers will be able to move the ball. I talked to Murray State coach Mitch Stewart last week and he is doing a good job rebuildng the program.
It is a great opening weekend in college football, with all sorts of marquee games. Credit the schools for scheduling big. The game I am most interested in is Oklahoma Houston. But there are a lot of others.
Enough with the weekend preview, time to get to your questions, Thanks as always for participating. Let me know if this time works OK.
Great questions to open the chat. Thank you.
I think there are two answers to your first question. No doubt, the staff brings more NFL knowledge to the sidelines. Many of the coaches have worked in the NFL and they know the NFL style of coaching. Is it better? In some ways, yes. The NFL has better athletes than the college game and is able to do more with them. But the college game is very, very good. And I think there might be more creativity and flexibility in the college game. We can't assume that the NFL way is always better. It is some of the time, but not all cheap jerseys of the time. I think the new staff will be very solid when it comes to midgame adjustments. Lovie Smith talked about that last week.
On the second question, I think the coaches will always try to push for more help when it comes to getting players into school. But the university has high standards and I don't expect there will be a lot of bending on that. I don't blame the coaches for wanting access to more players. They are no different than every other staff in the country. But the school has to do what is best for the university as a whole, not just the football team.
Given all the preseason talk about the running game, I will be stunned if the first play isn't a pitch to Ke'Shawn Vaughn. I will guess it goes for 6 yards. Probably to the right side.
On defense, Dawuane Smoot will bull rush the tackle early in the game and get to quarterback KD Humpries. The Murray State quarterback doesn't run much. Getting to him early will be critical to Illinois defensive success.
First touchdown will be a 17 yard sprint to the left side by Ke'Shawn Vaughn. I will guess he scores three times in the game. No pressure.
I should have included my thoughts in the AP story. That would have been a good idea.
Every day, I change my mind what I think will happen. Sometimes, I think the team looks really good and will go 7 5. Other days, cheap jerseys I lean to the 3 9 finish. So, probably somewhere in the middle of that, four to six wins with a chance for a bowl if the ball bounces their way. The team is thin, so it must avoid major injuries.
I agree it is a good idea to get students back to the game. This is an issue accross the country, not just Illinois. I will check to see if the tickets are free for the rest of th season. If it was me, I would make that one of the perks for going to school at Illinois. Other places do it. It makes a lot of sense.
They all seem to be holding their own. Jihad Ward is in the defensive plans for the Raiders. I expect him to play to a lot this season and be a starter soon in his career. Clayton Fejedelem is listed on the third team at strong safety with the Bengals. I think he will stick with the team. So will Ted Karras. Free agent guys have a tougher time, though I have heard good things about both Geronimo Allison and Josh Ferguson. The key for all of those guys is to do what they can to imprpress the coaches for this year and beyond. Once you stick with team. you have a chance to move up.
What grade would you give to the Illini's 2017 FB recruiting so far? With what is seemingly a good start I would think they would be more selective in recruiting the rest of the year wouldn't you? And with a good start to the season, where they display organization on the field, inspired play, and no quit attitude, and maybe win a game they shouldn't, wouldn't you think that would get the attention of recruits, their parents, and HS coaches. From afar I see Lovie as a good coach, leader, and someone who you would wat your kid to play for. Do I sound too much like a homer or what?
Lovie Smith said last week that he doesn't want to have the entire recruiting class filled now. I think that is smart. It will be much better for him to wait deeper into the recruiting season and pick and choose the players he really wants. Guys change a lot between their junior and senior seasons. I would want to see as much as I can of their senior years. Guys not on the board will move on based on how they play this year.
If Illinois gets off to a good start this season, I agree that will be a big help to recruiting. It will show the players that the new staff has a direction in mind and they nfl jerseys cheap know what they are doing. But even if the team struggles, it isn't a guarantee that recruiting will suffer. Lovie Smith has playing time to sell in 2017 and the chance to play for a former NFL coach. Both of those are attractive to top players.
I won't be surprised at all if the 2017 recruiting class is a strong one. You will be able to know that if the Illini land players that were considering top FBS programs, both in the Big Ten and beyond. Every time you beat Michigan State or Florida State or Auburn for a player, it is a good thing.
